Michael A. Cassell is set to become the chairman of the Maryland
Real Estate Commission next month. He was elected unanimously by board members
at their meeting last week.
Cassell, a real estate broker and appraiser,
has been in the industry for 31 years. He owns the Creative Real Estate Services
and Express Appraisal Services in Baltimore, and had been vice chairman of
the commission.
Cassell will fill the post held for the past two years
by Rockville lawyer Steven Van Grack, who was elected vice chairman of
the board last week. VanGrack said he wants to devote more time to other areas
of public service. His term on the board goes through 2006.
Cassell has
been a commission member for four years, with his term due to expire
at the end of this month. However, he said, the governor’s office has indicated
that he will be reappointed. Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.”s office said
the commission appointments are under review. State law allows commission members
to continue serving until they are reappointed or replaced.
The commission
oversees the state’s 36,000 agents and brokers. It administers exams,
issues licenses and investigates consumer complaints and is run by a nine-member
volunteer board appointed to staggered four-year terms.
